Designing rewards that actually get redeemed (and why most loyalty programmes get this wrong)
A reward that nobody redeems is a cost on your P&L and a promise you're not keeping. The science of redemption rates is well understood — here's how to apply it to your café.

The average café loyalty programme has a redemption rate of about 23%. That means for every four rewards a customer earns, three expire, get forgotten, or never get claimed. If you're the café owner, you're effectively giving away nothing — but your customers feel like you reneged on a promise.
Why rewards don't get redeemed
Three reasons, in order of frequency:
- The reward takes too long to earn. "Buy 20 coffees, get one free" sounds fine until you do the math: at one visit per day, that's three weeks. Most customers lose the card or the app before they get there.
- The reward isn't worth the trip. A 10% discount on your next purchase sounds reasonable to you. To a customer, it sounds like: "Drive to your café, find parking, wait in line... to save RM 1.50." That's not a reward; that's a chore.
- The customer forgets. This is the most fixable problem. If a customer earns a reward and you never tell them, they won't know to redeem it. Automated notifications close this gap.
The 7-visit rule
Research across retail loyalty programmes consistently shows that the sweet spot for earning a reward is 7-10 repeat visits. Below 7 visits, the reward feels cheap and doesn't drive behaviour change. Above 10, the completion rate drops sharply. For most cafés, 8 visits for a free drink is the right threshold.
What to actually offer
Not all rewards are equal. Based on what we see in Klicktify cafés:
- Free item of equal or lesser value — the classic "buy 8, get 1 free" — has the highest redemption rate. The customer understands the value immediately.
- Percentage off a bill (15% off) has decent redemption but doesn't create the same emotional hook as a free item.
- Tier upgrades (e.g., "Your next order is a size up") are cheap for you and feel generous to the customer.
- Birthday rewards have surprisingly good redemption because the customer is already motivated to visit.
The tier ladder
Once you have a basic programme running, adding tiers transforms it. Bronze, Silver, Gold — each with a faster path to rewards. A Silver member might earn a free drink after 6 visits instead of 8. They notice. They come back. They talk about it.
Track your redemption rate
In your Klicktify dashboard, go to Analytics → Rewards. Look at "Issued vs. Redeemed." If your redemption rate is below 60%, your reward threshold is probably too high, or you're not reminding customers when they're close. Both are fixable today.
